He who has received His testimony has set his seal to this, that God is true. John 3:33

Feeling defeated today. Reminding myself that Jesus is for me. That He will not forsake me in my weaknesses. I know that He is for me.

October 13, 2012:

A little bird I am,
Shut from the fields of air,
And in my cage I sit and sing
To Him who placed me there;
Well pleased a prisoner to be,
Because, my God, it pleases Thee.

My cage confines me round,
Freely I cannot fly,
But though my wings are closely bound,
My soul is at liberty;
For prison walls cannot control
The flight or freedom of the soul.

October 10, 2012:

Cynicism isn’t strength and ranting doesn’t rejuvenate and frustration can never accomplish what Faith can.

Does my life testify to my belief in the power of complaint — or the power of Christ?

If neither height nor depth nor death nor anything in heaven or earth can separate me from the love of God — surely neither can messy bedrooms or dirty sinks or loud kids or ugly days can separate me from the joy of the Lord.

Really — if nothing can separate me from the Love of the Lord — can anything separate me from the Joy of the Lord?  Breathe.

 Why let anything steal your joy?
If the Joy of the Lord is my strength, then why let anything steal my strength?

The Joy of the Lord is our strength — and anger leaves everyone weak.

Let something steal your joy — and you let something steal your strength.

October 8, 2012:

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened,
And I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
For I am gentle and in humble heart,
And you will find rest for your souls.
Matthew 11:28-29
October 4, 2012:

Therefore if you desire to know God's voice, never consider the final outcome or the possible results. Obey Him even when He asks you to move while you still see only darkness, for He Himself will be a glorious light within you. Then there will quickly spring up within your heart a knowledge of God and a fellowship with Him, which will be overpowering enough in themselves to hold you and Him together, even in the most severe tests and under the strongest pressures of life. - Way of Faith

October 2, 2012:

Do you understand that God may take away your comforts and privileges in order to make you a stronger Christian? Do you see why the Lord always trains His soldiers not by allowing them to lie on beds of ease but by calling them to difficult marches and service? He makes them wade through streams, swim across rivers, climb steep mountains, and walk many long marches carrying heavy backpacks of sorrow. This is how He develops soldiers- not by dressing them up in fine uniforms to strut at the gates of the barracks or to appear as handsome gentlemen to those who are strolling through the park. No, God knows that soldiers can only be made in battle and can not be developed in times of peace. We may be able to grow the raw materials of which soldiers are made, but turning them into true warriors requires the education brought about by the smell of gunpowder and by fighting in the midst of flying bullets and exploding bombs, not by living through pleasant peaceful times.  - Charles H. Spurgeon

 Wrung from the troubled spirit, in hard hours,
Of weakness, solitude, perchance of pain,
Truth springs like harvest from the well-plowed field,
And the soul feels it has not wept in vain.

...if you listen to all that I command you and walk in My ways, and do what is right in My sight by observing My statutes and My commandments, as My servant David did, then I will be with you and build you an enduring house... 1 Kings 11:38
 September 2, 2012:

O come, let us sing for joy to the Lord,
Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving,
Let us shout joyfully to Him with Psalms.
For the Lord is a great God and a great King above all gods,
In whose hands are the depths of the earth,
The peaks of the mountains are His also.
The sea is His for it was he who made it
And His hands formed the dry land.
Come, let us worship and bow down,
Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For He is our God and we are the people of His pasture
And the sheep of His hand.
Psalm 95: 1-7

August 31, 2012:

Abide with me; falls the eventide;
       The darkness deepens, Lord with me abide.
              When other helpers fail and comforts flee
                     Help of the helpless, abide with me.
I need Thy presence every passing hour.
       What but Thy grace can foil the tempters power?
              Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
                     Through cloud and sunshine abide with me.

And when it's time to work, make [me] a holy wonder.

March 31, 2012:

The pathway is broken
And the signs are unclear.
And I don't know the reason why you brought me here.
But just because you love me
The way that you do
I'm gonna walk through the valley if you want me to.
Cause I'm not who I was
When I took my first step.
And I'm clinging to the promise you're not through with me yet.
So if all of these trials
Bring me closer to you
Then I will go through the fire if you want me to.
It may not be the way I would have chosen.
When you lead me through a world that's not my home.
But you never said it would be easy
You only said I'd never go alone.
So when the whole world turns against me
And I'm all by myself.
And I can't hear you answer my cries for help
I'll remember the suffering
Your love put you through
And I will go through the valley if you want me to.
March 22, 2012:

Boast no more so very proudly, do not let arrogance come out of your mouth; for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and with Him actions are weighed. The bows of the mighty are shattered, but the feeble gird on strength. 1 Samuel 2:3-4
March 17, 2012:

But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment.
If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.
For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness,
godliness, faith, love,
perseverance and gentleness.
Fight the good fight of faith;
take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Bless the Lord, O my soul and all that is within me bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul and forget none of his benefits; who pardons all my iniquities, who heals all my diseases, who redeems my life from the pit, who crowns me with lovingkindness and compassion; who satisfies my years with good things so that my youth is renewed like the eagle. Psalm 103

January 28, 2012:

From all of our beginnings, we keep reliving the Garden story.
Adam and Eve are, simply, painfully, ungrateful for what God gave.
Isn't that the catalyst of all my sins?
Our fall was, has always been, and always will be that we aren't satisfied in God and what he gives. We hunger for something more, something other.
We eat. And in an instant, we are blind.
No longer do we see God as one we can trust. No longer do we perceive Him as wholly good.
We eat. And in an instant, we see.
Everywhere we look, we see a world of lack, a universe of loss, a cosmos of scarcity and injustice.
We are hungry. We eat. We are filled.... and emptied.
And still, we look at the fruit and see only the material means to fill our emptiness. We don't see the material world for what it is meant to be: as the means to communion with God.

"Choose" by Christy Knockles

Let me be in love with what You love
Let me be most satisfied in You
Forsaking what this world has offered me
I choose to be in love with You
I will choose to be in love with You

Let me know the peace that's mine in You
Let me know the joy my heart can sing
For I have nothing Lord apart from You
I choose to call on Christ in me
I will choose to call on Christ in me

For in the fullness of who You are
I can rest in this place
And giving over this, my journey Lord
I see nothing but Your face

Let me know that You have loved me first
Let me know the weight of my response
For You have long pursued my wandering heart
I choose to glory in Your cross
I will choose to glory in Your cross

And I bow down...
Humbly, I bow down...
Humbly, I bow down...
I bow down...

I bow down, I bow down
my beloved- here I am
I bow down, I bow down to You...

Contemplating the land.

But the Lord has taken you and brought you out of the iron furnace, from Egypt, to be a people for His own possession, as today. Deut 4:20

I am not in the wilderness anymore. The Lord has taken me out of the furnace and brought me to a new land. A land to possess. I may see giants, I may see wilderness, I may see entrapment, but He promises there is more there to behold. I just need to enter.

What is there? What does He promise?

For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills; a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey; a land where you will eat food without scarcity, in which you will not lack anything; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper. When you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land which He has given you. Deut 8:7-10

For the land, into which you are entering to possess it, is not like the land of Egypt from which you came, where you used to sow your seed and water it with your foot like a vegetable garden. But the land into which you are about to cross to possess it, a land of hills and valleys, drinks water from the rain of heaven, a land for which the Lord your God cares; the eyes of the Lord your God are always on it, from the beginning even to the end of the year. Deut 11: 10-12

It is a good land. A land the likes of which I've never walked in before. Where He gives the rain for my land in its season, where every place my foot treads will be mine. (Deut 11)

Why? So that I may know.

The Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps His covenant and His lovingkindness to a thousandth generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments. He will love you and bless you and multiply you. You shall be blessed above all peoples. Deut 7

That I may know He is God. That He can demonstrate His love to me once again. That I may see He wants to bless me. That I may be called blessed.

I enter. Out of the bad lands and into the good land.

He is [my] praise and He is [my] God, who has done these great and awesome things for [me] which [my] eyes have seen. Deut 10:21

December 15, 2011:

Stepping away from the book for a bit. I will get back to it at some point.

See I have placed the land before you; go in and possess the land which the Lord swore to give to your fathers; to Abraham to Isaac, and to Jacob. See the Lord your God has placed the land before you; go up, take possession, as the Lord , the God of your fathers, has spoken to you. Do not fear or be dismayed. The Lord your God who goes before you will Himself fight on your behalf, just as He did for you in Egypt before your eyes, and in the wilderness where you saw how the Lord your God carried you just as a man carries his son, in all the way which you have walked until you came to this place.

The land is before me. Indeed I am IN the land, and no matter the things God has done for me bringing me to this point (goes before me, carries me, seeks a place for me to camp, fire by night, cloud by day) I still fight against it. I still say no. I'm still afraid.

The Lord was angry saying, 'Not one of you shall see the good land which I swore to give your fathers... But as for you, turn around and set out for the wilderness...'
Then you said to me, 'We have sinned against the Lord; we will indeed go up and fight, just as the Lord our God commanded us.' And every man of you girded on his weapons of war, and regarded it as easy to go up into the hill country. And the Lord said to me, 'Do no go up or fight, for I am not among you; otherwise you will be defeated before your enemies.' So I spoke to you but you would not listen.

Too late.

Instead you rebelled against the command of the Lord, and acted presumptuously and went up into the hill country. The Amorites who lived in that hill country came out against you and chased you as bees do, and crushed you. Then you returned and wept before the Lord; but the Lord did not listen to your voice nor give ear to you. So you remained in Kadesh many days, the days that you spent there.

Then we turned and set out for the wilderness....

Don't wait. I can't wait. The Lord has promised good to me. To be my portion and my supply. To GIVE me this land. I don't need to fight - He will do it for me. Don't wait. The wilderness waits for me if I don't trust. Believe. Do. Enter.

Before it's too late.

Reason 12: To Take Away our Condemnation

Christ has died once for our sins. We will not be condemned for them. Condemnation is gone not because there isn't any, but because it has already happened. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Romans 8: 1

The world will bring its condemnation but we know that if God is for us then who can be against us? Romans 8:31 If they reject us, he accepts us. If they hate us, he loves us. If they imprison us, he sets our spirits free. If they afflict us, he refines us by the fire. If they dkill us, he makes ia a passage to paradise. They cannot defeat us. Christ has died. Christ is risen.We are alive in him. And in him there is no condemnation.

The Passion of the Christ pages 42-43

December 2, 2011:

Reason 11: To Complete the Obedience that Becomes our Righteousness

For as by the one mans disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one mans obedience the many will be made righteous. Romans 5:19

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21

The demands of God for entrance into eternal life are not merely that our unrighteousness be cancelled but that our perfect righteousness be established. Our sin was imputed to Christ, and thus he became our pardon. Christ's righteousness is imputed  to us and thus he becomes our perfection.

The Passion of the Christ pages 40-41

November 28, 2011:

Found it!
Reason 10: To Provide the Basis for our Justification

The verdict of justification does not make a person just. It declares them just. The moral change we undergo when we trust Christ is not justification. The Bible usually calls that sanctification- the process of becoming good. Justification is not that process. It is not a process at all. It is a declaration that happens in a moment. It is a verdict: Just! Righteous!

The Passion of the Christ pages 38-39

November 27, 2011:

Somehow my book got misplaced. Not sure how that happened considering I've been reading it pretty close to every day, but it did non-the-less. I plan on picking back up as soon as the book reveals itself. Until then, I leave you with this:

Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaint. As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever, Amen. Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation. If you are reviled for the name of Christ you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 1 Peter 4:8-14

November 25, 2011:

Reason 9: For the Forgiveness of Our Sins

Forgiveness assumes grace. Grace gives what someone doesn't deserve. It is giving away the right to get even. But forgiveness is not always enough. Justice cannot be forsaken.

That is why Christ suffered and died. In Him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses. Ephesians 1:7 Forgiveness costs us nothing. All our costly obedience is the fruit, not the root, of being forgiven. That's why call it grace. But it cost Jesus his life. That is why we call it just.

November 21, 2011:

Reason 8: To Become a Ransom for Many

The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45

Jesus needed no service from us. He was the giver not the receiver. No one takes my life from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. John 10:18 The price was paid freely, it was not forced. Which brings us again to His love. He freely chose to rescue us at the cost of His life.

The Passion of the Christ pages 34-35

November 19, 2011:

Reason 7: To Cancel the Legal Demands of the Law Against Us

What a folly it is to think that our good deeds may one day outweigh our bad ones. Without Christ exalting faith our deeds will signify nothing but rebellion.

The record of our bad deeds, along with the just penalties that each deserve, must be blotted out - not balanced. This is what Christ suffered and died to accomplish.

And you, who were dead in your trespasses... God made alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. Colossians 2:13

The Passion of the Christ pages 32-33

It is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this not of yourselves; it is the gift of God. Ephesians 2:8

November 18, 2011:

Reason 6: To Show His Own Love for Us

The death of Christ is not only the demonstration of God's love for us it is also the supreme expression of Christ's own love for all who receive it as their treasure. The sufferings and death of Christ have to do with me. It is my sin that cuts me off from God. It is my hard-heartedness and spiritual numbness that demean the worth of Christ.  I am lost and perishing. It is His love for me personally.

Christ paid the highest price possible to give me the greatest gift possible. He loved me and gave himself for me. Galations 2:20

The Passion of Jesus Christ pages 30-31

November 17, 2011:

(The Passion of the Christ con't)
Reason 5: To Show the Wealth of God's Love and Grace for Sinners

One will scarcely die for a righteous person - though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die- but God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:7-8

The measure of God's love for us is shown in two things. 1) The degree of his sacrifice. 2) The degree of our unworthiness.

He gave his only Son- divine Son- to save sinners. God chose to make this sacrifice to save us. We deserved  divine punishment not divine sacrifice.

There is only one explanation for God's sacrifice for us. It is not us. It is the riches of his grace. It is all free. It is not a response to our worth. It is the overflow of his infinite worth. That is what divine love is in the end: a passion to enthrall undeserving sinners, at great cost, with what will make us supremely happy forever, namely, his infinite beauty.

November 16, 2011:

Reason 4: To Achieve His Own Resurrection from the Dead

The death of Christ did not merely precede his resurrection - it was the price that obtained it.

What the death of Christ accomplished was so full and so perfect that the resurrection was the reward and vindication of Christ's achievement in death.

The wrath of God was satisfied, the holy curse against sin was absorbed, the obedience of Christ was completed, the price of forgiveness was paid, the righteousness of God was vindicated. All that was left was the public declaration of God's endorsement - raising Jesus from the dead. The resurrection proves that the death of Jesus is an all-sufficient price.

pages: 26-27

November 15, 2011:

Reason 3: To Learn Obedience and be Perfected

When the Bible says that Jesus 'learned obedience through what he suffered' (Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. Hebrews 5:8 and that he.... should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. Hebrews 2:10) it doesn't mean that he learned to stop disobeying. It means that with each new trial he learned in practice - and in pain- what it means to obey. When he was being 'made perfect through suffering he was gradually fulfilling the perfect righteousness that he had to have in order to save us.

If the Son of God had gone from incarnation to the cross without a life of temptation and pain to test his righteousness and his love he would not be a suitable Savior for fallen man. His suffering fulfilled his true humanity and made him able to call us brothers and sisters.

pages: 24-25

November 14, 2011:

Reason 2: To Please His Heavenly Father

Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief. Isaiah 53:10

What is most astonishing about this substitution of Christ for sinners is that is was God's idea.
On the one hand, the suffering of Christ is an outpouring of God's wrath because of sin. But on the other hand, Christ's suffering is a beautiful act of submission and obedience to the will of the Father.

It was a breathtaking strategy conceived of even before creation : not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 2 Timothy 1:9-10

pages: 22-23

November 13, 2011:

I am again working my way through the book "The Passion of Jesus Christ" by John Piper which lays out 50 reasons why Christ died for us. My hope is to be refreshed with a new outlook. I plan on reading one reason a day and sharing a little from that. So to the next 50 days - here we go.

Reason 1 (in no particular order): To Absorb the Wrath of God

If God were not just, there would be no demand for His Son to suffer and die. And if God were not loving, there would be no willingness for His Son to suffer and die. But God is both just and loving. Therefore His love is willing to meet the demands of His justice.

The seriousness of on insult rises with the dignity of the one insulted. Therefore, failure to love him is not trivial - it is treason. It defames God and destroys human happiness.

But the love of God does not rest with the curse that hangs over all sinful humanity. He is not content to show wrath, no matter how holy it is. Therefore, God sends his own son to absorb His wrath and bear the curse for all who trust Him.

pages 20-21
November 11, 2011:

He said, "Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burn offering  on one of the mountains of which I will tell you." Gen 22:2

The Lord asks, and has a right to ask for EVERYTHING from us.

He said, "Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me." Gen 22:12

November 8, 2011

The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge.
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge;
My savior, You save me from violence.
I call upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.
For the waves of death encompassed me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me; The cords of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called upon the Lord, yes, I cried to my God; and from His temple He heard my voice and my cry for help came into His ears. The the earth shook and quaked.
The foundations of heaven were trembling and were shaken, because He was angry.
Smoke went up out of His nostrils, fire from His mouth devoured; coals were kindled by it.
He bowed the heavens also and came down with thick darkness under His feet.
And He rode on a cherub and flew and He appeared on the wingsd of the wind.
And He made darkness canopies around Him, a mass of waters, thick clouds of the sky.
From the brightness before Him coals of fire were kindled. The Lord thundered from Heaven and the Most High uttered His voice.
And he sent out arrows and scattered them, lightning, and routed them.
Then the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were laid bare by the rebuke of the Lord at the blast of the breath of His nostrils.
He sent from on high, He took me, He drew me out of many waters.
He delivered me from my strong enemy,
From those who hated me, for they were too strong for me.
They confronted me in the day of my calamity, But the Lord was my support.
He also brought me forth into a broad place;
He rescued me because He delighted in me.
The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me. For I have kept the ways of the Lord and have not acted wickedly against my God.
For all His ordinances were before me, and as for His statutes, I did not depart from them.
I was also blameless toward Him, and I kept myself from my iniquity.
Therefore the Lord has recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness before His eyes.
With the kind you show Yourself kind; with the blameless you show Yourself blameless;
With the pure You show Yourself pure, and with the perverted You show Yourself astute.
And You save an afflicted people; But Your eyes are on the haughty whom You abase.
For You are my lamp, O Lord;
And the Lord illumines my darkness.
For by You I can run upon a troop; By my God I can scale a wall.
As for God, His way is blameless; The word of the Lord is tested;
He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.
For who is God besides the Lord? And who is a rock besides our God? God is my strong fortress;
And He sets the blameless in His way.
He makes my feet like hinds' feet and sets me on my high places.
He trains my hand for battle so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. You have also given me the shield of Your salvation and Your help makes me great.
You enlarge my steps under me and my feet have not slipped.
I pursued my enemies and destroyed them and I did not turn back until they were consumed.
And I have devoured them and shattered them so that they did not rise; and they fell under my feet.
For You have girded me with strength for battle; You have subdued under me those who rose up against me.
You have also made my enemies turn their backs to me and I destroyed those who hated me.
They looked but there was none to save; even to the Lord, but He did not answer them.
Then I pulverized them as the dust of the earth; I crushed and stamped them as the mire of the streets.
You have also delivered me from the contentions of my people; You have kept me as the head of the nations;
A people whom I have not known serve me.
Foreigners pretend obedience to me as soon as they hear, they obey me.
Foreigners lose heart and come trembling out of their fortresses.
The Lord lives and blessed be my rock;
And exalted be the God, the rock of my salvation.
The God who executes vengeance for me and brings down peoples under me,
Who also brings me out from my enemies; You even lift me up above those who rise up against me; You rescue me from the violent man. Therefore I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the nations and I will sing praises to Your name.
He is a tower of deliverance to His king and shows lovingkindness to His anointed, to David and his descendents
2 Samuel 22

And the LORD will guide you continually
   and satisfy your desire in scorched places
   and make your bones strong;
and you shall be like a watered garden,
   like a spring of water,
   whose waters do not fail.

Isaiah 58:11

November 3, 2011:

I will extol You, my God, O King,
And I will bless Your name forever and ever.
Every day I will bless You
And I will praise Your name forever and ever.
Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised,
And His greatness is unsearchable.
one generation shall praise Your works to another,
And shall declare Your mighty acts.
On the glorious splendor of Your majesty
And on Your wonderful works I will meditate.
Men shall speak of the power of Your awesome acts
And I will tell of Your greatness.
They shall eagerly utter the memory of Your abundant goodness.
And will shout joyfully of Your righteousness.
The Lord is gracious and merciful;
Slow to anger and great in lovingkindness.
The Lord is good to all, and His mercies are over all His works.
All Your works shall give thanks to You, O Lord,
And Your godly ones shall bless You.
They shall speak of the glory of Your kingdom and talk of Your power;
To make known to the sons of men Your mighty acts
And the glory of the majesty of Your kingdom.
Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom
And Your dominion endures throughout all generations.
The Lord sustains all who fall and raises up all who are bowed down.
The eyes of  all look to You
And  You give them their food in due time.
You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.
The Lord is righteous in all His ways
And kind in all His deeds.
The Lord is near to all who call upon Him,
To all who call upon Him in truth.
He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him;
He will also hear their cry and will save them.
The Lord keeps all who love Him, but all the wicked He will destroy.
My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
And all flesh will bless His holy name forever and ever.
Psalm 145

November 2, 2011:

A good name is to be more desired than great wealth, favor is better than  silver and gold. The rich and the poor have a common bond, the Lord is the maker of them all.

Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.

Every man's way is right in his own eyes but the Lord weighs the hearts.

Better is a dry morsel and quietness with it than a house full of feasting with strife.

The wise woman builds her house but the foolish tears it down with her own hands.

All the days of the afflicted are bad but a cheerful heart has a continual feast.

Commit your works to the Lord and your plans will be established.

He who gives attention to the word will find good and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.

My son, do not forget my teaching but let your heart keep my commandments; for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. Do not let kindness and truth leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good repute in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord will all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your body and refreshment to your bones.

The Book of Proverbs

October 30, 2011:

Dear restless heart, be still; don't fret and worry so;
God has a thousand ways His love and help to show;
Just trust, and trust, and trust, until His will you know.
Dear restless heart, be still, for peace is God's own smile,
His love can every wrong and sorrow reconcile;
Just love, and love, and love, and calmly wait awhile.
Dear restless heart, be brave; don't moan and sorrow so,
He hath a meaning kind in chilly winds that blow;
Just hope, and hope, and hope, until you braver grow.
Dear restless heart, repose upon His breast this hour,
His grace is strength and life, His love is bloom and flower;
Just rest, and rest, and rest, within His tender power.
Dear restless heart, be still! Don't struggle to be free;
God's life is in your life, from Him you may not flee;
Just pray, and pray, and pray, till you have faith to see.

For all the sin that lives in me,
It took a nail to set me free still,
What I do I don't want to do and so goes the story,
What You had in mind,
What we seek we'll find, shine, show me grace
A little more than I can give
A little more than I deserve
Unearth this holiness I can't earn.

Be to me a rock of habitation to which I may continually come. For You are my hope; O Lord God, You are my confidence from my youth. By You I have been sustained from my birth; You are He who took me from my mother's womb; My praise is continually of You. But as for me, I will hope continually, and will praise You yet more and more. Psalm 71: 3,5-6,14

Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart may fail, But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:25-26

Blessed be the Lord who daily bears our burden, the God who is our salvation. Psalm 68:19

Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the sustainer of my soul. Psalm 54:4

I waited patiently for the Lord; and He inclined to me and heard my cry. He brought up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, and He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear and will trust in the Lord. How blessed is the man who has made the Lord his trust, and has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood. Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders which You have done, and Your thoughts toward us; There is none to compare with You. If I would declare and speak of them, they would be too numerous to count. Psalm 40:1-5

Amazing grace how sweet the sound
Amazing love now flowing down
From hands and feet that were
Nailed to a tree.
His grace flows down and covers me.

October 23, 2011:

I will betroth you to Me forever;
Yes I will betroth you to Me in righteousness and in justice,
In lovingkindness and in compassion,
And I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness.
Then you will know the Lord.

October 21, 2011:

O God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly;

My soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You,

In a dry and weary land where there is no water.

Thus I have seen You in the sanctuary,

To see Your power and Your glory.

Because Your lovingkindness is better than life,

My lips will praise You.

So I will bless You as long as I live;

I will lift up my hands in Your name.

My soul is satisfied as with marrow and fatness,

And my mouth offers praises with joyful lips.

When I remember You on my bed,

I meditate on You in the night watches,

For You have been my help,

And in the shadow of Your wings I sing for joy.

My soul clings to you

Your right hand upholds me.

Psalm 63

October 20, 2011

 1Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.5 Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.6 And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.8 And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.9 And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.10 When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.14 And when she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.15 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.16 But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.18 Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.19 And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judæa to Cæsarea, and there abode.

So to the heart that knows Thy love, O Purest,
There is a temple sacred evermore,
And all the babble of life's angry voices
Dies in hushed silence at its peaceful door.
Far, far away, the roar of passion dieth,
And loving thoughts rise calm and peacefully,
And no rude storm, how fierce soe'er it flieth,
Disturbs the soul that dwells, O Lord, in Thee.

Water you turned into wine, opened the eyes of the blind there's no one like you none like You!
Into the darkness you shine out of the ashes we rise there's no one like you none like You!
Our God is greater, our God is stronger, God you are higher than any other.
Our God is Healer, Awesome in Power, Our God! Our God!

And if our God is for us, then who could ever stop us.
And if our God is with us, then what could stand against.

And if our God is for us, then who could ever stop us.
And if our God is with us, then what could stand against.
What could stand against.

Our God is greater, our God is stronger, God you are higher than any other.
Our God is Healer, Awesome in Power, Our God! Our God!
And if our God is for us, then who could ever stop us.
And if our God is with us, then what could stand against.
Then what could stand against.

It's a beautiful day. Enjoy the sun. Enjoy the breeze. See it as a gift from the God who created us and loves us. Take a breath. Drink some tea. Take a nap. Forgo housework (some of it, anyway). Eat the brownie. Plant a flower. Stop and see. Be thankful.

Two for this morning:

What His methods will be with you I cannot foretell. But you may be sure that He never works in an arbitrary way. He has a reason for everything He does. You may not understand why He leads you now in this way and now in that, but you may, nay, you must believe that perfection is stamped on His every act.

And let me assure you that as you penetrate the labyrinth of life in pursuit of Christian duty, you will often be surprised and charmed by meeting your Master Himself amid its windings and turnings and receive His soul-inspiring smile. Or, I should rather say, you will always meet Him, wherever you go.
Stepping Heavenward

October 11, 2011:

Do you not know? Have you not heard?
Has it not been declared to you from the beginning?
Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
It is He who sits above the circle of the earth,
And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers,
Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain
And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.
He it is who reduces rulers to nothing,
Who makes the judges of the earth meaningless.

Scarcely have they been planted,
Scarcely have they been sown,
Scarcely has their stock taken root in the earth,
But He merely blows on them, and they wither,
And the storm carries them away like stubble.
“To whom then will you liken Me
That I would be his equal?” says the Holy One.
Lift up your eyes on high
And see who has created these stars,
The One who leads forth their host by number,
He calls them all by name;

Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power,
Not one of them is missing.

Why do you say, O Jacob, and assert, O Israel,
“My way is hidden from the LORD,
And the justice due me escapes the notice of my God”?
Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth
Does not become weary or tired.

His understanding is inscrutable.
He gives strength to the weary,

And to him who lacks might He increases power.
Though youths grow weary and tired,
And vigorous young men stumble badly,
Yet those who wait for the LORD
Will gain new strength;
They will mount up with wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not become weary.

Isaiah 40:21-31

Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen. Jude 1:24-25

October 4, 2011:

O come, let us sing for joy to the Lord
Let us shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation.
Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving
Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.
For the Lord is a great God
And a great King above all gods
In whose hand are the depths of the earth
The peaks of the mountains are His also.
The sea is His for it was He who made it
And His hands formed the dry land.
Come, let us worship and bow down,
Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For He is our God
And we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand.

October 3, 2011:

It is in this state of the perfection of suffering that the Holy Spirit works many marvelous things in our souls. In such a condition, our whole being lies perfectly still under the hand of God; every faculty of the mind and will and heart are at last subdued; a quietness of eternity settles down into the whole being; the tongue grows still, and has but few words to say; it stops asking God questions; it stops crying, "Why hast thou forsaken me ?"

October 1, 2011:

Oh, praise the one who paid my debt and raised this life up from the dead!

September 30, 2011:

Be anxious for nothing
but in everything by prayer and supplication
with thanksgiving
let your requests be made known to God.
And the peace of God
which surpasses all comprehension
will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brethren,
whatever is true,
whatever is honorable,
whatever is right,
whatever is pure,
whatever is lovely,
whatever is of good repute,
if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise,
dwell on these things.
The things you have learned
and received
and heard
and seen in me,
practice these things,
and the God of peace will be with you.

September 29, 2011:

It is true that when Much Afraid looked at the mountains on the other side of the valley she wondered how they would ever manage to ascend them, but she found herself content to wait restfully and to wander in the valley as long as the Shepherd chose. One thing in particular comforted her; after the hardness and slipperiness of the way on the mountains, where she had stumbled and limped so painfully, she found that in those quiet green fields she could actually walk without stumbling, and could not feel her wounds and scars and stiffness at all. All this seemed a little strange because, of course, she really was in the Valley of Loss. Also, apparently, she was farther from the High Place than ever before. She asked the Shepherd about it one day, for the loveliest part of all was that he often walked with them down there, saying with a beautiful smile that it was on of his favorite haunts.

September 26, 2011:

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”

For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
You will not fear the terror of the night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
You will only look with your eyes
and see the recompense of the wicked.

Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place
the Most High, who is my refuge—
10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
no plague come near your tent.

11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the adder;
the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.

14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
I will protect him, because he knows my name.
15 When he calls to me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”

September 24, 2011:

Remembering today that God's grace is sufficient. His grace is more than enough for our pain - physical, mental, spiritual. More than enough for discouragement or depression. It covers our sins. It gives us strength. It heals. It redeems. This thorn in our side, although painful, is how He pulls us out of ourselves and into greater oneness with Him. It's how we learn that dependency on God is true freedom. He not only leads us there but He meets us there.

 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.'  2 Corinthians 12: 9-10

Grow also in love. Ask that your love may become extended, more intense, more practical, influencing every thought, word, and deed. Grow likewise in humility. Seek to lie very low, and know more of your own nothingness. As you grow downward in your humility, seek also to grow upward - having nearer approaches to God in prayer and more intimate fellowship with Jesus.

September 15, 2011:

My son, if you will receive my words and treasure my commandments within you, make your ear attentive to wisdom, incline your heart to understanding; for if you cry for discernment, lift your voice for understanding; if you seek her as silver and search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will discern the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding. He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice. You are wrong if you think that

September 10 and 11, 2011:

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord has anointed me
To bring good news to the afflicted;
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives
and freedom to prisoners;
To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God;
To comfort all who mourn, to grant those who mourn in Zion,
Giving them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting.
So they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord
That He may be glorified.
Then they will rebuild the ancient ruins, they will raise up the former devastations;
And they will repair the ruined cities, the desolations of many generations.
Strangers will stand and pasture your flocks,
And foreigners will be your farmers and your vinedressers.
But you will be called the priests of the Lord;
You will be spoken of as ministers of our God.
You will eat the wealth of nations, and in their riches you will boast.
Instead of your shame you will have a double portion,
And instead of humiliation they will shout for joy over their portion.
Therefore they will possess a double portion in their land,
Everlasting joy will be theirs.
For I, the Lord, love justice, I hate robbery in the burnt offering;
And I will faithfully give them recompense
And make an everlasting covenant with them.
Their offspring will be known among the nations, and their descendants
In the midst of the peoples. All who see them will recognize them
Because they are the offspring whom the Lord has blessed.
I will rejoice greatly in the Lord, My soul will exult in my God;
For He has clothed me with garments of salvation,
He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness
As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland,
And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
For as the earth brings forth its sprouts,
And as a garden causes the things sown in it to spring up,
So the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all nations.
Isaiah 61
September 9, 2011:

I stood a mendicant of God before His royal throne
And begged him for one priceless gift, which I could call my own.
I took the gift from out His hand, but as I would depart
I cried, “But Lord this is a thorn and it has pierced my heart.
This is a strange, a hurtful gift, which Thou hast given me.”
He said, “My child, I give good gifts and gave My best to thee.”
I took it home and though at first the cruel thorn hurt sore,
As long years passed I learned at last to love it more and more.
I learned He never gives a thorn without this added grace,
He takes the thorn to pin aside the veil which hides His face.

September 8, 2011:

The day before the hurricane Ben and I went to the grocery store to pick up a few last minute things. The lady in line behind us had a singular box of saltines. She said it was going to be what got her through the weekend without power if she happened to lose it. We bought them for her. I can not tell you how surprised and thankful she was. She said 'thank you' over and over again with a huge smile. Even the cashier was amazed. Today it's raining. It has been for several days. People are likely to be tired, rude, depressed. Give a hand, forgive quickly, smile kindly, give up the parking space, or buy a box of saltines for someone. They may not be as thankful as the woman in the grocery store or maybe they will. Either way I guarantee it will impress upon them.
September 7, 2011:

If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love,
I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surreneder my body to be burned,
but do not have love, it profits me nothing.
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails.

There is in every true woman's heart, a spark of heavenly fire,
